Arabische eenheid en strijd tegen slavernijOne of the main tenets of the Ba’ath Party has been to restore Palestinian sovereignty in Palestine and to unite the whole Arab people so that they would be a united country and a bastion against what they considered to be European colonialism. Israel is a key component of that colonialism. (American Free Press)

"The ideal of democracy," when in the caring hands of people of an altruistic disposition, supported by other more practical idealists, is inspiring and courageous. Unfortunately these rare souls have never managed to keep control of the democratic reins of power for long;
A government of the people, by the people, for the peopleAbraham Lincoln offered his profound understanding of the true source of freedom in a democracy, in his Gettysburg Address, Nov 18, 1863, as derived from a "government of the people, by the people, for the people..."
One year later, when the cruel civil war, which cost a vast amount of treasure and blood, was nearing its end, President Lincoln foretold of a crisis of capitalism that caused him to "tremble for the safety of my country." This is what he said:
"As a result of the war corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war." (Letter from Abraham Lincoln, to William F. Elkins, Nov. 21, 1864)
All men are created equalWriting to a friend at the time of his decision to join the Republican Party, Lincoln reminded him that the Declaration of Independence simply said, “all men are created equal.” It did not read, as many southern Democrats seemed to believe “all men are created equal, except negros.” Nor could it come to mean, as the anti-immigrant movement seemed to suggest, “all men are created equal, except foreigners and Catholics.”
Lincoln refused to accept barricades built of race, ethnicity and religion. America must remain true to the Founder’s vision or else, Lincoln gibed, “I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty—to Russia for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.” (Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Ethos)
Dit bericht The Boston Globe.
De Israelische Steun Aan KhomeinyThe Ba’ath Party of Iraq is a secular party. It believes in the separation of state and religion.
So the Shiite Muslims in Iran, led by the Ayatollah Khomeini, wanted a Muslim religious state like Khomeini brought to Iran. In fact, Khomeini wanted an Islamic republic composed of all of the Islamic states and eventually a world government. But to have that, Khomeini needed to conquer not only Iraq but also Mecca and Medina which are sites in Saudi Arabia that are holy to all Muslims—both Shiites and Sunnis. He had to go through Iraq, which is the only Arab country with a land border with Saudi Arabia. So Khomeini was calling on the radio for the Shiite soldiers in Iraq to defect and assassinate Saddam. The Shiites are more than 50 percent of the Islamic population in Iraq. There were assassination attempts.
Saddam believed that even though Iran had more than three times the manpower of Iraq and far greater strategic depth, he figured he could do a preemptive strike against Iran, since there were sanctions on Iran and the country couldn’t get spare parts. Saddam calculated that would stop Iran from invading Iraq and the rest of the Arab world.
However, Saddam miscalculated the fact that, during the shah’s time, Iran had financed part of the defense industry in Israel. There were arms factories in Israel that belonged jointly to Israel and the Iranian government.
While Khomeini was saying that Israel was another enemy of the Muslims, the Iranian army continued to have the same liaison people with Israel. Israel, in turn, saw this as an opportunity to give Iran parts for its military hardware and to get a war started between Iraq and Iran and therefore take the attention away from the Palestinian question. Nita Renfrew , American Free Press 13-7-2002
American-born Nita Renfrew went to Israel as an idealistic young liberal who wanted to experience life in a country she believed was a model for the world. What she discovered was not what she expected. It gave her new insights into what the Arab-Israeli conflict was really all about.
Interview met Denis HallidayThe former head of the U.N.'s humanitarian program in Iraq says an American invasion would be an international crime -- and would make the U.S. even less safe...
Question: Saddam is a ruthless despot and remains a fundamental problem for the Iraqi people. In its condemnation of Saddam, the Bush administration certainly has a claim to the moral higher ground, doesn't it?
I don't think so. I mean, Saddam Hussein may not be a nice man, but neither was George Bush Sr. Anybody who oversaw the Gulf War is well aware of crimes against humanity and is responsible thereof. We don't have to like the president of Iraq. Did we like the president of Indonesia? Or the Congo? Or Chile -- Mr. Pinochet? I don't think so.
We have no justification to punish the innocent civilians of any country simply because we don't like, in this case, a man who was [once] a friend and ally to the United States. For example, Donald Rumsfeld visited Iraq in 1983 -- spoke with Saddam Hussein, asked for an exchange of ambassadors. They know each other! Why can't Rumsfeld go back and reopen this dialogue and begin to understand what makes Iraq tick and help to create an atmosphere in the Middle East of peace -- as opposed to sustaining war, fear and terror, which the U.S. is doing at the moment.
Question: What do you feel might be a realistic way to end the current crisis between Iraq and the U.S.?
The great challenge today is to find a solution that is acceptable to those that have power in Washington and London and those on the Security Council and those in Baghdad. We have to get all of these elements lined up, and I daresay we have to include Israel as well. We need to look at what's viable under the charter and international law. We have to lift the economic embargo. We need to control arms and arms sales. And that means, in a sense, sanctioning ourselves, because we are the great problem: The five permanent members of the Security Council produce and sell something like 85 percent of the military weaponry in the world today. And they're the very countries that supposedly are in charge of international peace and security. That's quite a ludicrous situation we've got here...
The Americans are way out in front in terms of arms sales. We've got to control that and we've got to diminish the availability of weapons of all sort -- including weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. Then [we must] encourage Iraq to rebuild its relations with its neighbors and to deal with its own issues of civil rights, its relations with the Iraqi Kurdish population and with Kuwait for example.
Washington's New Witch HuntUnder the Bush administration, it is becoming increasingly evident that the U.S. can cause more damage to multilateral organizations by staying in them and shaping them to its ends. We have ample demonstration of this strategy in the successful lobbying by the U.S. to oust Mary Robinson as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, its removal of Robert Watson as head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and most ominously of all, the ouster of Jose Bustani as head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Just before he was dismissed. Bustani eloquently warned: "By dismissing me, an international precedent will have been established whereby any duly elected head of any international organization would at any point during his or her tenure remain vulnerable to the whims of one or a few major contributors. They would be in a position to remove any Director General, or Secretary General, from office at any point in time." (Ian Williams, 7-6-2002)
Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our time is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the "Freedom Party" (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.
Attack on Arab VillageA shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants — 240 men, women and children — and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin.
The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.
Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultra-nationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.
During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.
The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.
Discrepancies SeenThe discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a "Leader State" is the goal.
In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin's efforts, or even to expose to it[s] own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.
The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.

Zionisme & Amerikaans ChauvismeIn the 23rd Congress of the World Zionist Organization, Ben Gurion stated clearly: "The collective obligation of all Zionist organizations in all nations to help the Jewish State in all circumstances is unconditional, even if such an attitude is in conflict with their respective nations" (Jerusalem Post, August 17, 1952)
Talks with Hamas to end attacks against Israel failPalestinian National Authority (PNA) Minister of Planning Nabil Shaath announced Thursday that the talksbetween the PNA and Islamic Hamas movement on stopping suicide bombing attacks against Israel failed.
Shaath told Palestinian radio "Voice of Palestine" that unfortunately the dialogue between the PNA and Hamas to end bombingattacks inside Israel has failed. He said that the contacts between the PNA and Hamas in recent days had failed to produce any result in the creation of a nationalunity government that would include all of the Palestinian groups.
Reports said that Hamas had implicitly rejected the draft of a political manifesto drawn up by representatives of all the Palestinian organizations. The manifesto had stipulated the foundation of a Palestinian state in the territories captured by Israel in 1967 as the nationalaim of the Palestinians. Hamas representatives clarified that the organization was firm in its position that the Palestinian people had a right to live in all of its motherland - namely from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.
Arabische Verdeeldheid Leidt Tot ZelfvernietigingUnderlying most of the findings in the much cited 2002 UNDP Arab Human Development Report is the extraordinary lack of coordination between Arab countries. There is considerable irony in the fact that the Arabs are discussed and referred to both in this report and elsewhere as a group even though they seem rarely to function as one, except negatively.
It's always the same thing, factionalism, disunity, the absence of a common purpose for which in the end ordinary people pay the price in suffering, blood and endless destruction. Even on the level of social structure, it is almost a commonplace that Arabs as a group fight among themselves more than they do for a common purpose. We are individualists, it is said by way of justification, ignoring the fact that such disunity and internal disorganisation in the end damages our very existence as a people. Nothing can be more disheartening than the disputes that corrode Arab expatriate organisations, especially in places like the US and Europe, where relatively small Arab communities are surrounded by hostile environments and militant opponents who will stop at nothing to discredit the Arab struggle. Still, instead of trying to unite and work together, these communities get torn apart by totally unnecessary ideological and factional struggles that have no immediate relevance, no necessity at all so far as the surrounding field is concerned. (Edward Said, Al-Ahram Weekly 2002)
"Bush and his psychopathic henchman Rumsfeld keep leaking news of their impending invasion for 'regime change' in Iraq, and the Arabs have still not communicated a unified deterrent position against this new American insanity." Edward Said
HAMAS & Vrede
[Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement. For renouncing any part of Palestine means renouncing part of the religion; the nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its faith, the movement educates its members to adhere to its principles and to raise the banner of Allah over their homeland as they fight their Jihad: "Allah is the all-powerful, but most people are not aware."
From time to time a clamouring is voiced, to hold an International Conference in search for a solution to the problem. Some accept the idea, others reject it, for one reason or another, demanding the implementation of this or that conditions, as a prerequisite for agreeing to convene the Conference or for participating in it. But the Islamic Resistance Movement, which is aware of the [prospective] parties to this conference, and of their past and present positions towards the problems of the Muslims, does not believe that those conferences are capable of responding to demands, or of restoring rights or doing justice to the oppressed. Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the nonbelievers as arbitrators in the lands of Islam. Since when did the Unbelievers do justice to the Believers
"Undermining the peace process has always been the real target of Hamas and has played into the political ambitions of the Likud." Ray Hanania For Middle East News Online
"The phenomenal erosion of the UN credibility and authority has been largely responsible for the continued failure of peace efforts, simply because the protection and unlawful cover it offered Israel (even if that was the result of the unchallenged US influence) have all along encouraged Israeli intransigence and disrespect for international law." Hasan Abu Nimah: The absent UN
"The right course is of respect to the security and rights of others, through dealing with others in peace and establishing the obligations required by way of equitable dialogue and on the basis of international law and international covenants."
Interview met Condoleezza Rice"Do you have evidence that they have collaborated with the Al-Qaeda or are part of the whole terrorist network... ?
The case with Iraq has to do with the weapons of mass destruction they're acquiring, the threat that they are to the region... I would not be in the least surprised if they are supporting Al-Qaeda and we do know that in the Palestinian case, the Iraqis are offering $25,000 to parents... people whose children blow themselves up... a terrible thing to do. This is an awful regime... and we think the moral case against Iraq is very clear."
Democratie & Middelmaat"Bush, himself the most intellectually backward American president of my political lifetime, is surrounded by advisers whose bellicosity is exceeded only by their political, military and diplomatic illiteracy. Pity the man who relies on Rumsfeld, Cheney and Rice for counsel." Gerald Kaufman, Spectator 17-8-2002)
Rumsfeld's Crazy Foreign Policy TeamTo understand American policy, it is worth probing the character of the policy makers who design Rumsfeld's foreign policy. The three architects of American foreign policy are Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle. They will go down in Palestinian history as the true 'axis of evil'. Wolfowitz and Perle are card carrying individuals with a resume that entitles them to the highest ranks of the fanatical expansionist wing of the Likud party. Their current strategy is to divert attention from the Palestinian struggle for freedom by beating the war drums for an assault against Iraq. Their real agenda is to allow Sharon more time to 'win' against Palestinian resistance to Israeli repression. Like Sharon, they believe that there is a level of repression that can be continually and permanently inflicted on the Palestinian people to force them to capitulate to every Likudnik real estate fantasy. (By Ahmed Amr for Palestine Chronicle, 17-8-2002)
Droom & NachtmerrieIn The Dream and the Nightmare, which President Bush cites as one of the most influential books he has ever read, the conservative theorist Myron Magnet writes: "What underclass kids need most...is an authoritative link to traditional values of work, study, and self-improvement, and the assurance that these values can permit them to claim full membership in the larger community." Magnet quotes Eugene Lange, a businessman who promised scholarships to inner-city kids who graduated from high school: "'It's important that [inner-city kids] grow up to recognize that they are not perpetuating a life of the pariah, but that the resources of the community are legitimately theirs to take advantage of and contribute to and be a part of.'" (Electrolite, 31-8-2001)
Marvin Olasky was born Jewish, became Marxist, and then a born-again Christian from Texas. Myron Magnet is a neo-conservative who calls himself a Victorian. Together, they mean to transform America and to save us from liberalism, from the welfare state, and from all the excesses of the 1960s.
Russia, Iraq to Sign $40B DealRussia and Iraq are preparing to sign a $40 billion economic cooperation plan, the Iraqi ambassador to Moscow said Saturday. The pact was likely to strain Moscow's relations with Washington as the United States considers a military attack against Baghdad.
The five-year agreement envisions new cooperation in the fields of oil, irrigation, agriculture, railroads, other transportation sectors and electrical energy. It will most likely be signed in Baghdad in the beginning of September, Ambassador Abbas Khalaf told The Associated Press.
The news of the deal with Iraq followed signs that Moscow is maintaining or even increasing its cooperation with Iran and North Korea. Along with Iraq, those two countries make up what President Bush has labeled the "axis of evil" because of their efforts to obtain weapons of mass destruction. (ASSOCIATED PRESS, 17-8-2002)
Political trialsUnshaven, with hair tousled, Marwan Barghouti was brought this week before the Tel Aviv District Court with nothing in his hands save Israeli handcuffs and his cause. "Peace will be achieved with the end of the occupation," he yelled to the press gallery.
Fatah's West Bank leader stood indicted on charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to murder and "activities in a terrorist organisation".
The Palestinian defence is seeking to show that an Israeli court has no jurisdiction over an elected politician abducted from the occupied territories. For Israel the goal is to marshal evidence to convince all that Fatah, the PA and indeed Palestinian nationalism are entities "infested" with terror and that the Israeli occupation is a necessary bulwark in "the war against terrorism".
For Barghouti the case is to put that occupation on trial and defend his people's right to resist it.
In Tel Aviv he stated that two states for two peoples is the only formula that will bring security to the Israelis and independence to the Palestinians.
He was addressing the world, but he was nodding to his national movement in Gaza and the West Bank, and for one simple reason. He knows what history has taught: that a people whose leadership is conflicted on goals and divided on means will never be free. (Graham Usher, Al-Ahram Weekly 15-21 augustus 2002)
Duivels Irak & Goede AmerikanenThey all believed that their covert assistance to Mr. Hussein's military in the mid-1980's was a crucial factor in Iraq's victory in the war and the containment of a far more dangerous threat from Iran.
The Pentagon "wasn't so horrified by Iraq's use of gas," said one veteran of the program. "It was just another way of killing people — whether with a bullet or phosgene, it didn't make any difference," he said. (New York Times, 18-8-2002)
Gewetensvolle Individuen & Productieve SlavenHerbert Marcuse stressed the importance of the critical ability to negate the dominant thrust of consumer society and to imagine and work towards a future of emancipated multidimensional humanity.
Vice-President Spiro Agnew stated, "we should focus more on training these young people to be productive citizens and not to dissect and examine the whys and wherefores, the motives of human beings." (Marcuse, philosopher of the New left)
Marcuse was fairly linked with the so-called "student revolutionaries" because he provided a philosophical justification for almost everything they chose to do, from violent street confrontations with the authorities, through support for the Vietcong, to the suppression of points of view they find objectionable. In what is perhaps the most dangerous of his writings, an essay on "Repressive Tolerance" (1965), Marcuse attempted to justify the denial of freedom of speech...
Iraq sends letter to AnnanIraq anew affirmed that it is ready to hold a new round of technical talks with UNMOVIK experts to review what was implemented between May 1991-December 1998 concerning issues of disarmament. And to reach an agreement on dealing with the remaining issues.
In a letter sent to Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan, Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri expressed appreciation for Mr. Annan’s readiness to continue dialogue between Iraq and the U.N to solve the pending issues according to the international laws and Security Council resolutions.
The letter included all situations between Iraq and the Security Council since aggression in 1991 up to now. The letter stressed that American procedures caused great harm on UN credibility and gave a clear example of double-standard policy. (Iraq News Agency)
U.S. aims to expose Iraq over inspectorsThe United States is considering renewed diplomatic pressure on Iraq to prove that President Saddam Hussein is not sincere in his willingness to allow United Nations inspectors in the country.
According to a report in yesterday's Financial Times, the U.S. is seeking to prove to the world that Saddam Hussein is the real obstacle to resuming inspections of Iraq's non-conventional weapons capabilities, and to demonstrate that war is not Washington's primary objective. (Ha'aretz 18-8-2002)
Wapeninspectie & Amerikaanse SpionageOn January 7th, 1999, the New York Times confirmed rumors that United States planted spies on the United Nations: "United States officials said on Wednesday that American spies had worked undercover on teams of United Nations arms inspectors ferreting out secret Iraqi weapons programs." The Washington Post and Boston Globe further reported that the operation was aimed at Saddam Hussein himself. NBC News reported that U.N. communication equipment was used by U.S. intelligence to pass along intercepted Iraqi messages.
This is exactly what Saddam Hussein has been charging the U.N. teams with. He has long claimed that the teams, run by the United Nations Special Commission or UNSCOM, were full of "American spies and agents."
